Hiking and Skiing in Steamboat in May Season Ender~by JP Price

May has been a roller-coaster of weather...like always.  As it goes out like a lamb on Memorial Day, we remember  the veterans and active units who got jobs done so that we may be so lucky to enjoy skiing and other outdoor activities with the fearless freedom that can be easily overlooked today.

These past full moon nights some core skiers, snowboarders, and photographers got creative in the Steamboat Terrain Park.  Please enjoy the fruits of their labors from the past week and recap some past missions from the crazy month of May.

What to do in Steamboat, Spring Into Summer Carnival is a must visit!

The Spring Into Summer carnival benefits the Strawberry Park Elementary School and the Steamboat Middle School.

Loud music, brain shaking, and cotton candy. What more could you ask for? The carnival is a place for family and friends to go on vacation, without leaving town. Amongst the brightly lit rides was the Gravitron, a crowd favorite that's sure to make you remember what you ate for lunch.

What to do in Steamboat, try Steamboat's First Friday Artwalk!

Construction on main street didn't slow art enthusiasts from strolling through the Month of May's First Friday Artwalk across downtown Steamboat Springs. There was a strong showing across all venues as many opened their doors to welcome viewers while offering refreshments and events. Among those, Creekside provided a delicious spread of cookies and finger foods showcasing the unique artwork of local painter Patricia Murphy Bolten. Urbane hosted beats and live music as viewers stepped in to see the annual Skate Deck Art show. The Artist Gallery of Steamboat had it's rooms packed with mingling onlookers offering wine and cheeses while showcasing the Eggs to Ovaries show, a fundraiser for the Norma Livingston Ovarian Cancer Foundation. The First Friday Artwalk happens on the first Friday of every month. All events are free and most run from 5 to around 8 p.m. Some include live music and refreshments and all are open to friends and family.

Ways to Beat the Mud Season Blues in Steamboat Intro Vol.1

After a long winter it is important to decompress.  It's all apart of the "Revolving Door" lifestyle cycle spun by the seasons.  So upon returning with a refreshed body and mind, or in the uncommon case that you travel here to take advantage of the amazing deals and empty playgrounds, there are still plenty of things to do in Steamboat to keep the body moving and the mind grooving.

So stay tuned for pictures and video of the spring renaissance...

Please enjoy some good words on, "The Revolving Door of Life" from our friends at TRANSIT COLLECTIVE:

RAIL RODEO AT STEAMBOAT

Words & photos by:  Ned Cremin

Steamboat Rial Rodeo Throws Down

Fans packed the slope sides of Little Rodeo this weekend to watch Steamboats annual-invite only Rail Rodeo event presented by Akinz, Ellis Snowboards, Urbane, Ride Sports & Volkl. Steamboats stellar Terrain Park crew deserves big credit for building the 15 foot quarter pipe, box, 2 rail, 2 jump multi-feature layout- it was a hit. The deep powder day that saw high winds shutting down upper mountain didn't slow the skiers and riders from coming out and throwing it down. As the Dirty Heads played a free show in Gondi Square, the snowy afternoon hosted over 30-coed competitors competing in a jam-style format divided only by their respective sports. Making a strong showing and hanging late with the boys into the final rounds were talented females Whitney Poulin-riding smooth on her board and Julie McElvain spinning down the rails on skis. After nearly two hours of competition, the results were tallied:

Skiers:

1)Chappy Geer

2)Adrian Pougiales

3) Kevin Todd

Snowboarders:

1)Eric Van Assche

2)Pat Rafferty

3)Richie Eaton

Much Thanks to Nick Roma & the Crew @ Steamboat for the hard work putting on such a dope event!
